The National Parks Conservation Association asked Young and Rubicam, Chicago to find an illustrator for their new poster campaign. NPCA's print PSA campaign features the "blueprints" for some of our most popular national park icons: Delicate Arch at Arches National Park, a giant sequoia tree from Sequoia National Park, and Yosemite Falls from Yosemite National Park. The absurd blueprints remind us that America's national parks are irreplaceable treasures, and compel us to protect our heritage while we still can. The art direction that was given is shown below, after the posters. The rest is our creativity. IT'S NOT LIKE WE CAN MAKE NEW ONES.

The creativity of the mechanical drawings were recognized by the2006 One Show for creative excellence and named a finalist in the design category, one of the few nonprofits to be recognized by this premiere international advertising awards competition. Finalists were selected from nearly 17,000 entries submitted from over 55 countries.

Giant Sequoia. Sequoia national Park, CA. How to create an artificial sequoia complete with animatronic squirrels, photovoltaic kernels. Latex needles, made in China of course, foam filled cones and synthetic bark. The giant tree would have a flexible polyfoam sub-structure and an anchor system that allowed for movement. The whole tree would be coated in a flame retardant finish. Mass production may be possible depending on budget.

The whole thing then has a stucco coating with a flex additive. Thermal and Vibration expansion joints for seismic stability. Titanium auger anchors with adjustable rate shock absorbtion. Available in orange, salmon or dusty rose.

Yosemite Falls. Yosemite National Park, CA. Illustration to show the reconstruction of the falls. A lot like a showerhead, with turbine hydraulic pump and fountain jet. Welded aluminum mesh over a steel frame construction, covered first in foam and fiberglass with a final layer of sprayed on Bondo, carved and textured to look like rock. Recycled plastic trees, shrubs, and miscellaneous “nature” to be independently contracted to add a feeling of realism where needed. Estimated shipping weight 20,000 tons.
